Dr. Pickart offers treatment for ganglion cysts to the residents of Ventura, Camarillo, and the surrounding areas of California.
What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sack that presents as a bump on either the wrist or hand. The cyst usually grows out of a joint capsule or tendon sheath. The bumps can vary in size. While some seem to continue to grow, others spontaneously shrink.
Who Is Usually Affected by the Cysts?
Young women. However, older patients can develop cysts associated with chronic arthritis or tendonitis. Likewise, men are not immune.
What Causes a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst usually develops from irritation of a joint capsule (such as arthritis) or a tendon sheath (such as tendonitis).
Are There Any Symptoms?
Most produce no discomfort. The patient presents to the doctor because she wonders, “What is this lump?”
However, in some cases, the nodule may put pressure on a nerve, which can produce pain or tenderness. In some instances, the cyst may reduce mobility or weaken the grip.
The ganglion cysts that arise from the joint next to the base of the nail are sometimes referred to as mucous cysts. These cysts can put pressure on the base of the nail causing nail grooving or splitting. More often than other ganglia, mucous cysts can rupture, leading to small wounds and/or infections.
How Are Ganglion Cysts Treated?
Since ganglion cysts are not cancerous tumors, reassurance alone may be the preferred treatment. If the ganglion is in a favorable location, the doctor can attempt to aspirate the cyst with a needle—to drain fluid from the cyst. Aspiration may be effective in 10% of cases.
What Is Involved in the Surgery Process?
Surgical removal of a ganglion cyst is a common outpatient procedure. After the instillation of a local or regional anesthetic, Dr. Pickart will make a small incision, through which he will remove the cyst and destroy its base, where it arises from the joint or tendon sheath. The skin is closed with dissolvable sutures, and a comfortable splint is applied.
